Rupert Murdoch’s decision to launch a Sunday version of The Sun was denounced by politicians today as “massively premature”.

Labour MP Chris Bryant, who has led the phone-hacking campaign, also described the decision to lift the suspensions on all arrested staff as the “most cynical piece of hypocrisy”.

He said News International had campaigned for public officials who have been charged with criminal offences to be suspended from office but was now apparently not applying the same requirement to its own staff.

Mr Bryant said: “I think it is massively premature because one would have thought the Murdoch empire would want to wait until Leveson had completed his inquiry and the the police and prosecuting authorities had completed their investigations.

“He (Mr Murdoch) is meant still to be ’draining the swamp’ and yet the swamp is meant to produce another newspaper.

“The most cynical piece of hypocrisy is that News International has tirelessly campaigned for people who have been charged to be suspended from public office and yet journalists who have been charged at News International are apparently not going to be suspended.”

During a visit to the newspaper’s headquarters in Wapping, east London, today, Mr Murdoch declared his “unwavering support” for its journalists as he announced he was lifting the suspensions of all arrested staff.

The media mogul said he will begin publishing the top-selling tabloid seven days a week by launching a new paper called the Sun on Sunday “very soon”.

If there was the remotest possibility of achieving that, it would have been tried.

He's committed no crimes.

Other than been being very successful, which is obviously unforgivable.

I think we all expected this news some time ago. I remember when the NoW was closed we all expected the Sunday Sun to be established fairly quickly. I hope he gives some of the sacked staff their jobs back, and tells them to be more careful next time. I expect I am quite alone in this, but I have never thought this "hacking" to be such a big "scandal". Just journalists doing what journalists do, and using modern technology to do it.

In the US, I have no doubt that he would be charged.

Er... he lives in the US, is a US citizen and the company is head-quartered in the US.

But the crimes were commited in the UK.

I suppose if we had just one, official and gummint-funded, broadsheet ...... call it "Pravda"? .... that would bring joy to the lefty heart. I think the world is a better and more interesting place for the presence of these tabloids.

And also, many people are not going to buy or read "serious" newspapers are they?

Titles like The Sun and it's failing lefty competitor, The Mirror, are for many people, the only papers that they're ever likely to read.

Ok, so they may not not take a particularly intellectual approach to current events but they outsell all the other newspapers by some margin (well the Sun does anyway), so they must be doing something right.

Murdoch made a big error closing it down in my view. No sooner did he do it than the lefty hate mob started trying to bring down the Sun.

He's seen that now and is following the correct path imo.

Early this week the other media (esp the left leaning media) were getting highly excited about the Sun being closed down.

Murdoch flew in, and their excitement grew to almost pre-orgasmic levels.

Murdoch went to address the staff at the Sun...(just like he did at the Screws.....)

Murdoch publicly backed them, reinstated the (very small number of) suspended arrested staff (who are after all innocent until proved guilty), and announced the expansion of the title to 7 days a week.

Well done him.

I'm not sure that phone hacking, computer hacking, routinely lying and distorting and pandering to the very worst in human nature really counts as "doing smething right".

Fair enough, as long as he is given six months (to provide a generous time-frame to deal with the necessary sales) to end his operations in the kingdom.

He became a U.S. citizen (undertaking the most reprehensible action in the process) because the cousins have the good sense not to allow foreigners to have his degree of media control.

Can you say specifically, what crimes he himself personally (not someone who worked for a minor offshoot of the multinational company he heads), has committed?
